My Great-Grandfather Michael
Gesell (Gessell?)
was a strong Baptist.
My Grandfather Gus Gesell was
raised a Baptist,
but after marrying my
Grandmother Mae Wendel, the whole
family became Lutheran.
Lemberg
(Newdorf?) Baptist Church
The Baptists had a church south
of Lemberg,
with a cemetery nearby
This Cemetery still exists,
but now is in the middle of a farmers field.

Gottlieb Gesell, brother to Michael,
moved to Lemberg
from the US, in 1890 and homesteaded
nearby
Gottlieb would have attended the
Lemberg Baptist Church,
located in the early 1900’s on the
Sam Scheirer farm,
just south of Lemberg., where many
Baptist people had settled.
The Church Cemetery, (Where Gottlieb
and his wife are buried),
is still on this site. Lorne Sheirer,
owned the farm in 1990.
Some years later, the congregation
decided to move the church
into the town of Lemberg, and it
was situated
on what is now the corner of Franz
and Chickney streets.
It eventually became the Apostolic
Church.
When the depression hit, many families,
Gottlieb’s included,
were forced to leave Saskatchewan,
and settle in the interior of BC.
Most of these in the Vancouver
area,
joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church
at 6858 Fraser St. It is interesting
to note, that Gottlieb’s son August
is possibly buried in a cemetery
on Fraser St

it as
the Newdorf Church (German)
established 1893 with 23 Members
in 1901
